The Hickner Birding Trail is a half-mile crushed granite trail that loops though a 20-acre coastal, live oak forest that borders the east side of the lake. At different times of the year, one can find migrating waterfowl, warblers, assorted song birds, woodpeckers, sparrows as well as the resident bird population. A total of 189 species of birds and waterfowl were recorded during weekly bird surveys from October 2020 to June 2021. Alligators have been seen along the lake's banks as well as many other amphibians, insects and mammals.
